Building upon principles rooted in landscape ecology, landscape heterogeneity presents an opportunity to embrace the concept of difference to build resilient and community-focused urban fabrics. This dialogue exposes the interconnected relationship between ecology and the anthropological sciences. From the design of a public landscape to commemorate Black culture to increasing ecological complexity in urban and suburban systems through planting, landscape heterogeneity creates a platform for change within the doctrine and practice of designing the urban realm.

Diana Fernandez
Diana Fernandez, Deputy Chief of Urban Design, City of Boston.

Diana is a proven thinker, collaborator, and leader, who teams effortlessly with architects, planners, urban designers, ecologists, and civil engineers design equitable and sustainable places. She writes and lectures on the discourses of landscape architecture, urban design, and equity. Her work has been published and nationally recognized through ULI, ASLA, SCUP, AIA, and APA. She has also been awarded the 2019-2020 LAF Fellowship in leadership and innovation, honored with the Emerging Professional Medal in 2020, and named a 30 under 30 Leader for Temple University.

With over a decade of private practice experience, Diana has built a design portfolio that reassesses the policies that have perpetuated race, gender, environmental and socioeconomic inequality, and created design methodologies that can respond to and correct them. Her experience spans a broad range of projects from planning to built work. She brings to each project - as well as a myriad of corporate initiatives - strong critical thinking, a willingness to engage in thoughtful debate, and a commitment to quality. She leads and champions heterogeneous design strategies in planning and built design practices from a landscape and urban design perspective. Diana also provides critical thought and design leadership for landscape and urban design practices at the national level through the LAF, ASLA, AIA, and APA.
