The BAC Wood Shop is a 600-square-foot area located in the basement of the 320 Newbury St. building. It contains a 10" table saw, 8" jointer, 14" planer, drill press, scroll saw, router table, sanding machines, and various hand and power tools. There are two workbenches in the shop, and classroom space next door is frequently available for handwork and assembly.
Projects undertaken in the shop relate to studio and class assignments and thesis model fabrication. The shop manager and student monitors supervise open hours, and they are available to assist with the planning and execution of the wooden components of models, mock-ups, and full-size objects.
Attendance at a safety lecture and orientation is required before taking advantage of this facility. Orientations are given the first Saturday of the month throughout the spring and fall semesters. The lecture runs from 10am until 12 noon. There is no need to make a reservation. The shop is closed on holidays and during the summer session and semester breaks.
The Wood Shop manager, Robert Fortado, is available to provide additional information and advise on the shop's suitability for specific projects. Rob may be reached by phone at 617-585-0207 or by email at robert.fortado@the-bac.edu.
