Writing Center
The Writing Center is open regularly Monday through Thursday. Hours are posted at the start of every semester. Additional times may be available upon request. Email/Virtual sessions can be scheduled during regular Writing Center hours. However, writing consultants may ask you to come in if they feel they need a face-to-face meeting to work on a paper.

  1. The service operates on a by-appointment basis. Sessions are available in half hour and hour blocks. (Generally longer class papers are scheduled in one-hour segments; short papers, resumes and cover letters in half hour.)
  2. While we invite you to try and drop-in, keep in mind, that you will be taken only if a time has gone unfilled. In addition, students can try to drop-in only during posted Writing Center hours. Please keep this in mind - we cannot guarantee you a time if you just drop by.
  3. If you are 15 minutes late for a scheduled appointment, you may forfeit your session. If someone else is seeking help at that time (i.e. a drop-in), s/he will get the time. (So if you are running late, let us know.)
  4. We request a cancellation notice of at least 24 hours, although we always want to know if you cannot make an appointment (as often we are able to fill the slot). However, to prevent appointments from going unused, if:
    • You no-show once
    • Cancel twice at the last minute (within two hours of your appointment)
    • Cancel three times within 24 hours of your appointment

You will not be permitted to sign up ahead of time any longer. If you need writing help, you will have to attempt to drop-in.
  5. We reserve the right to limit sign-ups to one session per class or project a week. However, you are welcome to try and drop-in for extra help. If there are open times, you are welcome to use them.
  6. When the schedule is full, a waiting list for slots is kept. Students are contacted if times come available.
  7. Any appeals of the above should go to the Director of the Learning Resource Center.

English as a Second Language Tutoring
Writing consultants can also help students for whom English is not their first language. All of the above guidelines apply. However, please note: consultants only assist with class or practice-related work. They are not available for general ESL tutoring.

Math, Physics and Structures Tutoring
Tutoring for these subjects operates on both a drop-in and by-appointment bases.

Please note: tutors for these subjects should not be expected to complete your homework for you. They are meant to supplement classroom instruction. Students using tutoring must complete their work ahead of time and show up for tutoring with specific questions.

  1. Math, Physics, & Structures drop-in hours will be posted at the beginning of every semester. You do not need to schedule appointments for these times. Simply show up. Students interested in getting tutored should try the drop-in times first.
  2. If scheduling conflicts prevent you from getting to drop-in hours, or if you feel you need more intensive help, please see the Director of the Learning Resource Center to discuss the possibility of scheduling regular one-on-one or small group tutoring.
  3. If you schedule one-on-one tutoring, the same no-show rules apply as for writing sessions. If you stand-up a subject-tutor your tutoring privileges are suspended until you meet with the Director of the Learning Resource Center. Multiple no-shows result in permanent suspension. However, you can continue to use drop-in tutoring.
  4. Individual sessions will be limited to one hour/week (Monday-Sunday). Group sessions up to two hours a week. You can attend drop-in over and above the individual time limits. If you feel you need more assistance, please talk to the Director of the Learning Resource Center. Individual sessions are capped at eight hours for the semester (except upon appeal to the Director of the LRC).

CAD Tutoring
CAD tutoring is meant to support students who are taken or have completed CAD classes. It is not meant to take the place of a class. If you have not taken a class but have CAD needs, we will help you if we can. In these cases, however, you should contact the Applications Support Specialist located in the Education Technology Office (Room 402).

CAD tutoring follows the same general rules as Math, Physics and Structures except for the following two characteristics:

  1. Tutoring through the LRC operates solely on a by-appointment basis.
  2. Individual sessions are capped at two hours a week (Monday-Sunday) with a maximum of five hours for an 8-week course
