Per "SHIP" Student Health Insurance Plan regulations 956 CMR 8.02, a student registered as fulltime or parttime and enrolled in a degree-granting or certificate program at the BAC and taking course remotely due to COVID-19 will be required to show proof of coverage or be enrolled in the BAC's student health insurance plan.

With that being said, we are working with students who will not be living in the State of Massachusetts. Those of you who will be living outside of Massachusetts and outside of the United States of America will need to show proof of comparable coverage in the place in which you will be taking your classes remotely.

If you are registered for the Fall 2021 classes which are being run both online and onsite due to COVID-19, we will be permitting waivers for where you currently live and are taking your classes.

PLEASE BE ADVISED: The SHIP regulations require BAC students to provide the BAC proof that you have a Health Insurance/Benefit Plan by filling out a waiver that constitutes "comparable coverage". The instructions can be found here.

This means your health insurance/Benefit Plan must provide for you:

"reasonably comprehensive coverage of health services, including preventive and primary care, Emergency Services, surgical services, hospitalization benefits, ambulatory patient services, mental health services, and prescription drugs"; and

access to those covered services is "reasonably accessible to the Student in the area where the Student attends School". See 956 CMR 8.05(2)(a).

A student participating in classes remotely for Fall 2020 due to COVID-19, the "area where the Student attends School" is the location where the Student is currently remotely attending classes for the relevant term. See 956 CMR 8.05 (2)(c)(3). In addition, the BAC may waive participation in SHIP if the Student is studying in a foreign country and the Student has coverage in that foreign location. See 956 CMR 8.05 (2)(c)(2).

Please note, Students may waive SHIP coverage if they have comparable coverage such as out-of-state Medicaid, out-of-state Exchange Marketplace coverage (i.e., Qualified Health Plans), out-of-state employer sponsored insurance (e.g., HMO, PPO, POS), or foreign health coverage in the area in which they are taking classes remotely.

The BAC will continue to offer student health insurance plans for those who need it as per usual.
