International Student FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible to study at the BAC?
Any international student who has obtained a pre-professional or unrelated bachelor's degree from an accredited school is eligible for the master's degree programs at the BAC. Students with a prior degree in architecture or interior design should determine if their degree is professional, making them overqualified for the program. This can be done through a foreign credential evaluation from www.ece.org or www.wes.org.

How much does it cost to study at the BAC?
The 2006-2007 tuition is estimated at $13,832 for both the Master of Architecture and Master of Interior Design programs.

Is financial aid available to international students?
The BAC does not offer federal financial aid to international students. International students are encouraged to find aid from outside organizations.

Can international students work?
On an F-1 student visa, students are permitted to work until they have completed the BAC's 54-credit (M.Arch) and 45-credit (MID) requirement under the Practical Curricular Training stipulation of the U.S. government. Work can be paid or unpaid and must meet the practice component requirements of the BAC's educational programs.

Where will I live?
The BAC sends a Housing Guide to all accepted students. The guide includes information about apartments, Boston neighborhoods, realtors and other moving-related issues. Students must find their own living accommodations. They often choose a location near their place of employment.

What is the minimum TOEFL score requirement?
The BAC accepts students with a TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), or 89-90 (internet-based). The BAC recommends that all students with borderline scores speak with the International Student Advisor regarding English proficiency requirements in the degree programs.

How long is the program?
The Master of Architecture and Master of Interior Design programs each take approximately 5 years to complete. Length of stay varies, and can potentially be reduced, depending on prior academic and work experience. The length of the programs is due to the unique model of working during the day and taking classes in the evenings. Full-time students take 6 to 10 academic credits per semester (usually 3 courses), and earn additional credits for their time as paid employees at local design firms.

Is there an organization at the college that supports international student life in Boston?
Yes. The BAC Global Student Association (GSA) meets regularly for workshops and social events to support the international students at the BAC.

The BAC program requires working in the profession, in addition to attending classes. Will my visa allow me to do this?
Students on an F1 visa are eligible for to work under authorized curricular practical training (CPT). Please speak with the BAC International Student Advisor for more details.
