Educational Programs

The BAC offers first professional degree programs in architecture and interior design, at the graduate and undergraduate level. A first professional degree in Landscape Architecure is offered at the undergraduate level.

In addition to the first professional degrees, the BAC offers a bachelor of design studies degree.

Through the Continuing Education department, the BAC also offers a variety of certificate programs in design-related fields, as well as courses and seminars of interest to both professional designers and the general public.

Educational Model
All degree programs feature the BAC's model of concurrent learning: working in approved, paid, supervised positions in design firms during the day -- the "practice" component of the curriculum -- while studying several evenings a week at the BAC -- the "academic" component of the curriculum. Although each component has a sequence of its own, the two are designed to be concurrent, allowing progress in one to facilitate learning in the other.

For new students enrolling in the professional degree programs, the BAC also offers an Academic-Only First-Year option. Launched in the fall of 2002, this option enables students with little if any academic and experiential background in design to engage in a primarily daytime, "academic-only" program for the first year. Students begin the concurrent curriculum -- academic and practice -- at the beginning of their second year at the BAC.

Faculty of Practicing Professionals
BAC faculty are drawn from the area's more than 200 design firms. Working professionals by day, faculty members come to the BAC in the late afternoon or evening to teach in the classroom or studio, serve as mentors or advisors on student projects, or serve on one of the College's various committees. Upholding the spirit of volunteerism that has prevailed at the BAC since its founding, many of these faculty members donate their time in service to the BAC and its students.

Lifelong Learning
Architects, interior designers, landscape architects, facility managers, and other industry professionals may earn continuing education credits by attending BAC courses, offered both at the College and in area firms. For those preparing for the Architecture Registration Exam (ARE), the BAC offers Saturday seminars during the fall and spring terms.
