Information Literacy Program
Mission
The mission of the Information Literacy program is to support the curriculum of the Boston Architectural College by helping students become both discerning consumers of information and life-long learners. The program also exists to familiarize students with art and design resources that will contribute to their professional development.
Goals of the Program
- Collaborate with faculty to provide information literacy within the classroom
- Promote the value of the library to students and faculty
- Familiarize students with the library’s services, materials and resources
- Enable students to become more efficient, effective and independent researchers
- Create awareness of the subject-specific resources that exist
Core Competencies
The content of all instruction is based on the “Information Competencies for Students in Design Disciplines” published by the Art Libraries Society of North America.
What We Teach
Librarians will work with faculty members to create a customized instruction session that addresses specific research needs of their students. Topics covered in library instructions can include the following:
- Basic Research Strategies
- Online Catalog Searching
- Best practices in the use of Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals
- Finding Plans and Images
- Online and Print Reference Materials at the Library
- General Database Searching
- Introduction to Periodical Literature
- Evaluating Information on the Web
- Subject-Specific Resources
We are happy to offer instructions that are geared toward specific class or research assignments.
