IN THE NEWS
Solar Decathlon
The solar decathlon is a national contest between twenty colleges and universities run by the US Department of Energy (USDOE). These finalists will construct their project on the Washington Mall from October 9-13 and 15-18, 2009. Students from the Boston Architectural College have teamed up with Tuft’s University to form Team Boston, one of the finalists of the competition. Development and competition entrees are entirely student run, from the design process to final construction and fund-raising. Team Boston is currently in the construction process, but the project must be dismantled and rebuilt on the Washington Mall in three days. The contestants will be required to participate in ten assessments: Architecture, Market Viability, Engineering, Lighting Design, Communications, Comfort Zone, Hot Water, Appliances, Home Entertainment and Net Metering to determine strengths and weaknesses. One task includes cooking for their neighbors twice to insure that indoor comfort is maintained and that the energy collected through the design covers the energy used.
Boston Architectural College Sustainability Council
In the fall of 2008, the BAC formed a Sustainability Council, under the chairmanship of Art Byers, Director of Facilities. The Council’s mission is to develop and coordinate the efforts to green the BAC’s facilities and activities, including efforts to meet our obligations under the Presidents’ Climate Commitment. In addition to the Director of Facilities, the Council is comprised of the Head of the Architectural School and Dean Jeff Stein, the Heads of the Interior Design, Landscape Architecture and Design Schools, the Director of Sustainable Design, the Director of External and Government Relations, representatives from the Board of Overseers, the alumni and the faculty, and two student representatives. Initial activities will focus on establishing our baseline carbon footprint
