The Richness of Details

Jon Andersen-Miller
Jon Andersen-Miller
Interior Design Certificate
1990
I started at the BAC part-time in 1986 because I love architecture; the history, the art of the built environment.

Jon graduated from Vassar in 1984 with a degree in Art History. After moving to Boston in 1985, he enrolled in architecture classes at the Boston Architectural Center. He enrolled in the Center’s Interior Design program, from which he graduated in 1990. From 1990 to present, he’s been involved with the College in various ways; he’s taught classes including History of Modern Design and History of Furniture. He served on the Board of Trustees as ID Faculty Representative, and on the Library Committee for 15 years. Jon was employed by E. Verner Johnson and Associates, Museum Architects, 1986 through 1995. He worked full-time and freelance for the Boston decorating firms of Anthony Catalfano Interiors and William Hodgins, Inc. Following that he established the firm of Jon Andersen Design Service mid-1996.

“I started at the BAC part-time in 1986, because I loved architecture; the history, the art of the built environment.  I took architecture classes for a while, but I found I was attracted to the richness of details and human scale elements in built projects. I interned at an architecture firm that specialized mainly in large-scale architecture projects, so interior detailing seemed a bit secondary. It wasn't until I went into interior design that I got to work at a finer level of design, and found it quite rewarding.  I got my BAC 3-year certificate in Interior Design in 1990 and passed my NCIDQ in 1993.”

This spring Jon moved to Los Angeles with his partner, architect Matt Miller.
“We've reopened our offices here and have started working with west coast clients.  We're enjoying the new adventure!"

Jon’s firm specializes mainly in residential design, occasionally taking on commercial projects. Recent commercial projects include the public spaces for an elderly housing project, a high-rise condominium project, and a YWCA battered women’s shelter.

The ten-plus-years Jon has spent working in residential design has allowed him to work on projects from historic brownstone townhouse renovations to new construction. Jon has provided all aspects of interior design to his residential clients, including: space planning, furnishings layouts, lighting designs, custom casework and furniture design, furniture selection and budgeting, color, materials and finishes specifications, site visits and construction coordination.
