Richard Fitzgerald has been a supporter and advocate of the BAC for 25 years. Richard helped forge a strong alliance and working partnership between the BAC and the Boston Society of Architects (BSA) while serving as Executive Director of the BSA from 1984 to 2008. Under his leadership during that period, the BAC and BSA collaborated on numerous events benefiting design education and the professional design community and Richard helped make available to many BAC students AIA-sponsored scholarship opportunities.

Richard has served on several important BAC strategic planning and governance task forces; he helped shape the new BAC Strategic Plan for 2012-2017 and helped draft the new BAC by-laws this past year.

Richard, a New York native, earned a BA in English from Amherst College. Returning to New York City after college, Richard acted in street theater, edited a philanthropy-oriented journal and was the co-founder of a repertory theater on Long Island (while working as a home-appliance installer).

Richard returned to Massachusetts in the late 1970s to serve as deputy director of The Artists Foundation in Boston, then served a similar role with the then-called Massachusetts Council on the Arts and Humanities (the state arts agency), before becoming Executive Director of the Boston Society of Architects in 1984.
