Melissa Popovic is a Bachelor of Interior Architecture candidate at the BAC. She was born in Florida to a Spanish mother and Ukranian father, and moved to Merrimac, MA at a young age. After high school, she studied interior design at Wentworth Institute of Technology, but wanted to have real life experience outside the classroom. A pivotal summer of working for a local interior design office brought the fire and passion for design that Melissa was looking for. A transfer to the BAC ensured that she would be able to continue working on real projects while going to school.

As an artistic child, Melissa was constantly seen painting something, whether it be on paper or the walls. She was very active with color and experimented with different shapes and techniques. As Melissa grew older, her eye for design strengthened and she would find herself thinking of how a space could function better if a piece of funiture or wall were relocated. People watching is one of Melissa's favorite past times as well, so she is intrigued by the way people react in a space.

Melissa credits her coworkers and her boss for guiding and teaching her everything they know. "Applying real life experience and knowledge has changed me as a person academically," says Melissa, "I'm understanding the value of partnership and communicating to the right people in a professional way." She has also been able to learn how to mentally walk through her space before ever laying her pencil to the paper.

The students and faculty have helped push Melissa into new realms of creativity and discipline, and she says the Study Abroad program in Paris was one of her favorite experiences, soaking in Parisian culture while exploring architectural landmarks in the summer of 2012.

Melissa served as the Treasurer of the Interior Design Society from 2013-2014, and currently works as an Interior Designer at Baker Design Group.
