AD20/21
Modernism in the 20th & 21st Centuries is unique, annual event, featuring more than 45 exhibitors of art and design of the 20th and 21st centuries. Held at the Boston Center for the Arts Cyclorama and produced by Fusco and Four: The BAC is the beneficiary of the opening night gala.
ALUMNI PROGRAMS AND MENTORING
The BAC Alumni Association works to improve the College while increasing the active involvement of alumni. The Association's mentoring program, aimed at helping students navigate their studies successfully, includes mock interview workshops, portfolio reviews with AOP students, and matching students with alumni mentors.
ANNUAL FUND
The BAC relies on the Annual Fund to fulfill its mission and support the programs and people who give the BAC its unique character. The BAC's ability to provide important student resources and services, fulfill immediate needs and implement long-range plans depends on having a reliable pool of donors and a growing Annual Fund.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
The BAC stays connected with its surrounding neighborhoods. Through Advanced Studios, Sketch Problems and the Design/Build Workshops, BAC students are often called upon to help solve real design problems in the community. Financial and material resources are necessary to provide these classes with the tools they need to get the job done.
COMMUNITY DESIGN RESOURCE CENTER
The CDRC provides services and resources that assist communities to envision, advocate and implement high-quality design solutions, and ensure equal access to healthy, sustainable built environments. CDRC's most recent project was a workshop in Roxbury that engaged young people in designing safe neighborhood spaces.
DEAN ARCANGELO CASCIERI LECTURESHIP IN THE HUMANITIES
The Cascieri Lectureship was established in 1992 to honor Dean Arcangelo Cascieri's outstanding contributions during his 60-year tenure at the BAC. Each year the BAC welcomes a speaker whose vision and philosophy are consistent with the spirit of humanism that exemplified the Dean.
DIVERSITY INITIATIVES
The BAC is committed, as part of its mission, to increasing diversity in the design professions. We seek to enrich the choices available to urban young people through targeted programs including the BAC Summer Academy, the Citizen Schools WOW program and class visits by schools such as Beacon Academy.
FACILITIES
The BAC physical plant is rapidly growing, and, with the acquisition of 951 Boylston Street, funding needs for the BAC campus are expanding as well. There are a host of opportunities for renovation and improvement at 951 Boylston, 320 Newbury and 100 Mass. Ave. In particular, the College is interested in finishing the first floor "student center" meeting spaces, windows and accessibility plan at 951 Boylston St.; the renovation of our flagship building at 320 Newbury St. and the ingenious and forward-thinking "Green Alley Project" of geothermal and rainwater recapture systems in Alley #444 between our two principal buildings. Our growth and program expansion of the last several years requires upgraded facilities for teaching and learning.
NAMING OPPORTUNITIES
The BAC's dynamic urban campus is filled by design with spaces that will be both significant and memorable throughout a student's academic career. Classrooms, studios, lecture halls, the library, the Loft, the deck overlooking Newbury Street and the new spaces at 951 Boylston - all offer friends of the BAC a chance to leave a lasting legacy through the gift of a Named Space.
LECTURE PROGRAMS
The BAC takes an innovative approach to lecture programs, sponsoring conversations that engage our stakeholders in issues such as collaboration, practice and the future of design. Through annual events such as the Sasaki Distinguished Visiting Critic and individual lectures - often organized by students for students - on topics such as the work of Louis Kahn, ..... more.....we invite distinguished speakers to address the community, fostering an atmosphere of lifelong learning.
MCCORMICK GALLERY EVENTS
McCormick Gallery is a showcase for exhibitions and a visual means to teach, engage and educate. The Gallery exhibits a variety of design work that speaks to wider themes of sustainability, historic preservation, new technologies, and the BAC values of social responsibility, accessibility and diversity. The Gallery also exhibits the final thesis and studio work of each year's graduating class.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The BAC is committed to strengthening the College's workforce, and providing its faculty and staff with the tools for success. Seminars, trainings and workshops enable participants to hone their teaching and presentation skills, while national conferencesScholarships and Prizes
As the increase in the cost of education continues to outpace the growth in average family income, the BAC must be proactive in creating new award opportunities, while continuing to strengthen its existing funds. Individuals and firms may support a specific scholarship fund or award, create a new Named Scholarship, or endow a Named Scholarship to benefit future generations of BAC students.
SUMMER ACADEMY
The BAC Summer Academy is a career exploration program for high school students who have a strong interest in the architecture and design professions. Students experience the field of design through hands-on projects, interactive learning and educational field trips. Scholarships are available through the Houseman Summer Academy Scholarship program and the BAC's Summer Academy Financial Need Scholarship.
TRAVEL PROGRAMS
Combining practical credit-earning courses with immersion into diverse cultures and settings makes for a memorable and effective learning experience. BAC Travel programs such as the A. Tony Tappé Fontainebleau Travel Prize (France) and the Designer's Lighting Forum (Germany, New York City) are two of our newest offerings to students.
URBAN SUSTAINABILITY AT THE BAC
As part of our commitment to principles of sustainable design, the College has begun plans to construct a Green Roof on 320 Newbury and a Green Alley between 320 Newbury and 951 Boylston. These initiatives will play a significant role in addressing serious issues affecting Boston's Back Bay, while serving as exceptional examples of sustainability and the College's commitment to the future of Boston and its neighborhoods.
URBAN DESIGN/ BUILD WORKSHOP
In this workshop, students learn the value of community involvement as well as hands-on experience. They work with a community organization to provide a thoughtful, well-constructed structure that will enrich the neighborhood. The BAC and faculty donate time and shop facilities, but the workshop needs financial support as well as donated materials to make these important projects a reality.
