When Partners Healthcare set out to design a replacement facility for the 40-year-old Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston, MA, the ownership team knew they wanted to create a project that would serve as an international model for environmental and social sustainability in a rehabilitation setting. Working with an experienced and open-minded design team, Partners made a critical decision to apply the principles of Universal Design to every aspect of the project, from site planning to patient room layouts, and everything in-between. Completed in 2013, the design of the new Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital greatly exceeds minimum regulatory standards for accessibility, leaving behind the old paradigm of "just tell me what I have to do" and opting instead for an approach to regenerative healthcare design that is firmly grounded in the global realities of the 21st century. During this session, senior members of the ownership and design teams will share an overview of the facility design and discuss key aspects of the design process, including full-scale mock-ups, staff and patient simulations, and user-expert engagement.
