City Lab Intensive is an orientation experience for all entering undergraduate and graduate students as an introduction to the stimulating foundation year. Interdisciplinary teams work alongside section instructors, and are engaged in a series of activities involving five study sites in the City of Boston, accessed by foot and public transportation. Each student team explores, discusses, and analyzes two metropolitan Boston neighborhood locations over the course of two consecutive weekends. Each team, led by the section instructor and a teaching assistant from a local design firm, conducts a series of hands-on exercises and reflective activities, combined with guest presentations given by design practitioners and members of community or municipal organizations whose work focuses on community engagement through design. The City Lab Intensive is an introduction to concurrent education at the BAC. Students experience discovery and analysis, and develop curiosity and an appreciation for learning outside the classroom in a personal, applied manner, where collaboration and effective communication is essential.
