    What Our Students Think

I was a student of yours in Building Envelope (BE) offered a few semesters ago at the BAC. I thought perhaps you might be interested in seeing this photo, we finally pounded the last nail into this house a couple of months ago, and now, I would say, my final project is truly complete. During construction, I was able to put the knowledge I had gained from class immediately to work, it was a huge help. BE proved to be one of the best courses I have ever taken

Through a distance/ low-residency program that includes brief periods of intensive study in Boston, the BAC's online Master of Design Studies in Sustainable Design creates leaders of the green building revolution. In classes with leading practitioners and thinkers in the field, students acquire the technical expertise, leadership skills, and resolve required for the vital work of transforming how we create and occupy our buildings and communities. Students may enroll in the masters program described here or take individual courses and pursue a certificate which may later be applied to masters study.

      Approach

Coursework is grounded in whole systems thinking, a philosophy which holds that the built environment should be designed as a set of interactive systems engaged with the larger systems of nature and society.

      • Hands-on workshops in Boston with leading practitioners immerse students in whole systems thinking.
      • Elective courses in sustainable design theory and history, building design, neighborhood and community planning, construction, and facilities operation give students the chance to refine and focus technical skills.
      • A final capstone project hones leadership skills by engaging students in an independent design or research project...more

      Curriculum

The MDS in Sustainable Design can be completed in four semesters. The program allows some flexibility  in scheduling online electives which may be taken over more semesters to accomodate work schedules...more
