This advanced design course examines large scale urban design opportunities for complex sites in the Boston area and beyond, focusing on a given complex site with mixed use development, waterfront or wetlands, brownfields and transportation that impede or create development opportunities for revitalization. Students will develop design strategies that assist communities in their examination of how best to integrate their utilitarian responsibilities more harmoniously into the fabric of the natural environment. Students will work on selected sites to explore such design issues as arrival and sequence, the effects of time and speed on visual quality, environmental restoration needs and multi-modal development paths.
